Artie Gilkes, a Penn State product and recent addition to Bob Sevene's "CMS East"
crew, seized the lead at two miles and gradually pulled away from, among others, Mike Smith, (Wachusett HS 98, James Madison University) who was fresh off a bronze medal performance in the 5,000 meters at the previous weekend's Junior Pan Am Games in Florida. Last year's winner, Maurits van der Veen, turned on the jets in the final downhill mile to edge Smith for fourth. Solid efforts by Rich Bolt (6th) and Kevin Beck (8th) gave CMS five of the top eight slots.
Caitlyn Ramsey was fourth woman overall.
Otto Lies easily took the male veterans' crown, while on the women's side Phyllis Brooks grabbed second in that category. Joe Drugan was second male senior and Maryann Corriveau duplicated that finish on the women's side. Carol Robichaud was the third female master.
What this course giveth - a pronounced elevation drop from start to finish - the steamy weather, at least in part, taketh away. Despite the scorcher of an afternoon, 897 souls completed the trek to the Wachusett Brewery, many of them motivated in no small part by the divine nature of the refreshments offered there.
