CMS turned in yet another strong Grand Prix performance with three first-place finishes (men's open, men's masters and women's masters), one second (women's seniors), one third (men's veterans), one fourth (women's open) and one fifth (men's seniors). For the fourth consecutive time this year, CMS easily scored the most total team points.
As they did three weeks earlier at the 12K Championship in Bedford, Eric Morse and Dave Dunham finished 1-2 overall in leading the CMS men's open team to victory. Also scoring were Richard Bolt, Byrne Decker and new club member Tim McCormick. In its quest for an unbelievable 15th consecutive USATF-NE Grand Championship dating back to 1985, the CMS men's open team has opened up a three-point lead over the BAA.
Five "old-line" club members - Geary Daniels, Jim Garcia, Kevin McGovern, Bob Hodge and Rich Ovian - combined to take the men's masters team title. In the process, the team, which is the defending Grand Prix champion, vaulted over the Whirlaway Racing Team into first-place in the men's masters competition.
Placing first for the fourth consecutive race this year was the CMS women's masters team. Scoring for the team, which is also the defending Grand Prix champion, were Mary Lammi, Sidney Letendre and Carol Hurley. Mary was easily the first overall female master.
Mary Ryczek, second female senior overall, Linda Usher and Carol Goodrow scored for the second-place women's seniors team. This was the fourth consecutive time that CMS finished second to the Cambridge Sports Union.
Although it placed third, the CMS men's veteran's team not only retained its first-place position in the Grand Prix standings, it also increased its lead over the second-place North Medford Club. Scoring for the team were Stu Thurston, Otto Lies and Paul McDermott.
With a fourth-place finish, the women's open team dropped out of first-place in the Grand Prix. Scoring were Mary Lammi, who down-scored from the masters division, Karen McGahie, Sidney Letendre, who also downscored, Kathie Swanson and Ellen MacGilvray.
The men's seniors team recorded its best finish of the year - fifth. Scoring were John Boyle, who was the second senior in the race, Bob Girouard, George Kasierski, Peter Orni and Stu Thurston, who downscored from the veteran's division.
Next Grand Prix race is the Brewery Exchange 5K in Lowell in September.
