THE SIXTH ANNUAL SUNRISE KIWANIS |

The 15K served as the Arizona TAC championship. Carlos Paradelo and Paul Zimmerman, both of Tempe, hammered through a series of five minute miles on the up and down, point to point course. Paradelo put Zimmerman away in the last mile. Paradelo ran the second fastest time ever on this course, his time beaten only by a Canadian Olympic team member. The Arizona weather was spectacular, especially in comparison with the
Massachusetts weather. Race time was 7:30AM and the temperature started at 50F. By 9AM, temperature had risen to 70F with dry, clear conditions. Massachusetts had 30 to 40F, rain, snow. Ha!
CMS member Barry Smith took time out from a very busy business trip (uh huh, yup, sure...very busy) to compete in the 5K event. Barry placed 5th in his age group (old, but not musty) and 40th of 200 total competitors. The 5K race was a two-loop affair, encircling the World's Tallest Fountain. A fountain in the desert. Now I've seen everything.
The races were conducted as part of the Great Fair, a three day event that promotes Fountain Hills, AZ. No promotion is needed. Fountain Hills is beautiful, located northeast of Phoenix. The town is located in the valley and up the sides of the 2,000 foot, red sandstone McDowell mountains. Arizonians are busy converting the desert to a green paradise and Fountain Hills is rapidly moving along.
