The Web Guy (me) traveled to Dedham to see the "CMS East" team compete in the CAN-AM meet. I have posted their names many times on the CMS web site, but this was my first chance to actually see them in person. I pestered the other fans with questions like "Is that Darin Shearer?" Of course, the fans knew who the performers were because they were usually related to them in some way. (Hello Mrs. Milligan). And, these fans are friendly (especially the female runner who fell on top of me in the stands...yowza!).
Low key, high performance. That should be the motto of the CAN-AM series. The evening was pleasantly warm, with an occasional breeze. Ideal weather for running fast times, on a fast track, with fast competition. Low key? How about the toddler playing in the steeplechase water jump after the race?
In the first section of the women's 800, Allison Goldkamp of CMS looked strong through a first 400 of about 61 seconds, but then hit the wall over the last 200 meters or so. 800 meter runners suffer mightily when that big, heavy bear climbs on their back for the ride to the finish line. In the seeded section, Jennifer Toomey of CMS put up a grand struggle, but still lost her meet record to Marla Runyon.
Sarah Dupre, of Providence College and Canada, took the unseeded section of the women's 1500 in 4:26. Sarah recently placed eighth in the NCAA 3000 meters. In the seeded section, Robin Meagher took down the meet and stadium record with a 4:08.53. However, Robin needed 4:08 or better to qualify for the Worlds next month in Seville. Maybe Robin will get the time next week, when the series moves to Canada.
In the women's 5K, Donna Garcia took the lead from the start and relentlessly moved away from 2nd placer Melissa Correa. Deidre Milligan and Stacey Mosely of CMS ran shoulder to shoulder, helping each other with the pace, until the very end, when Deidre opened up a small lead.
In the men's 800, Joe Lemar, running with a prosthesis on his right leg, ran a superb 2:15.
So, that's Darrin Shearer. Darrin seemed to be sprinting the whole way enroute to his 1:54.62 800. Every photo I have seen of Darrin shows him grimacing and straining. Now I know that's the way he runs the entire race. The man clearly runs at maximum effort.
The men's 1500 featured one of several Stanford runners. Cardinal Jason Lunn roared to a nice 3:41.37, taking over on the last 400 meters and not letting anyone close in. Eric Nadeau, with his signature black socks, ran upfront for the first 800, then decided to give it a rest. Chris Karas of CMS showed that he may be the next CMS'er to go under 4:00 for the mile. Chris ran the 1500 in 3:43.54. The normal conversion rate would bring Chris home in 4:00.5. Close!
The men's 5K had several pace-setters. The first 800 was led by a runner that several people claimed had been recruited from the stands 10 minutes before the race. His white t-shirt and Dockers' shorts lent credibility to the claim. He led through the 800 in 2:16, then dropped out.
Jason Balkman of Stanford took over the race from there and ran solo the rest of the way. Jason's Stanford teammates refer to him by his last name, not his first. Curious. Balkman, a Stanford Junior, recently finished 2nd in the NCAA 10K, as part of a 1-2-3 finish by Stanford. Balkman's 1st 5K at the NCAAs was 14:38. Jason also ran the NCAA 5,000, scoring points with his eighth place finish in 14:11. Here he accelerated to 14:06.
In the men's 3K steeplechase, Sandu Rebenciuc ran a powerful 8:40. Sandu finished just in front of another Stanford runner, Greg Jimmerson. The race leader, whose name I missed, looked strong until the very last water jump, 160 yards from home, when he suddenly bonked and staggered home. Apparently that same bear jumped on his back and rode him home.
