Dave Dunham overcame troublesome sensations from the large bolt protruding from his ankle to finish 18th overall and 3rd among New Englanders (30:47). Byrne Decker's bid for the top slot among Mainiacs fell short, but his 3rd-place showing in that category netted him $250 and his prediction that Dunham would dip below 31 minutes earned him an additional $50 from the sandbagging Bradford speedster.
Tim Boilard survived an epic jackrabbit start to finish 24th in 32:04, mere strides in front of women's winner Catherine Ndereba. Kevin Beck, the surprised victim of Ndereba's left elbow near the two-mile mark, faded dismally to 48th place. Despondent and in desperate need of attention, reportedly contemplated a spectacular headfirst leap from atop the lighthouse at the finish in Fort Williams Park.
44-year-old Marge Bellisle (38:47) was 10th among female masters; moreover, with the possible exception of Colorado luminary Jane Welzel, also 44, no women older than Marge beat her.
Kudos to Peepholes Bank for summoning some of the most enthusiastic and committed volunteers imaginable, and to technical coordinator Dave McGillvray and his crew for conducting another seamless event. Point-to-point races are logistical nightmares waiting to unfold, but here, parking at the start was plentiful and the shuttle service from the finish area back to the start was excellent (though one bus reportedly did sideswipe a parked car).
To perhaps catch a glimpse of some of these people, tune in to ESPN's "Road Race of the Month" show at 1 p.m. on Aug. 24 or 3:30 a.m. (yeah, right) on Aug. 28.
