| The Mayfly 3.5 Miler |
With the organizing of a road race, luck is always, of course, a key component. No matter how well planned, weather is always a variable. As members of the CMS timing and scoring crew checked in at 7:00AM to begin registration for the first-ever running of The Mayfly 3.5M, the common complaint was, "Why are they (the organizing Community Club of West Boylston) running an early May race at 8:00AM? What's wrong with 10:00AM?"
As the last runners approached the finish line just before 9:00AM, a thunderstorm rolled through the area and heavy rain fell for the next two hours. Had not the organizers opted for the early start, the race would have been run in absolutely abysmal conditions.
Timothy Boilard (Princeton) continued his string of local first place finishes, while Geary Daniels (Dudley) placed second overall and was the first master. A day previous, Geary was a part of the CMS men's masters' team which finished first at the USATF-NE Grand Prix 5K Championship held in Manchester, NH. Heather Beam (West Boylston) was the first of ten female masters in the race.
A sign of the running times in the United States - over half the field was comprised of age 40+ runners.
