Of the 850+ who entered the race, only 603 finished. What happened to nearly 30% of the entrants?

First, the Fallon Five is one of the great bargains in road racing. In a time when nondescript 5K's and 5M's routinely charge $15 to $20 (and sometimes more), the Fallon Five entry fee is $3. For the $3 investment, runners receive: (1) a goodly amount of post-race refreshments; (2) excellent prizes including $100 each to the first male and female finishers and gift certificates to the top three male and female finishers in six different divisions, and a random prize of an all-expenses paid trip for two to either the Bermuda Marathon/10K or the Disneyworld Marathon/5K; and (3) long-sleeve t-shirts to the first 600 entrants. Each year, approximately 100 individuals enter the race with no intention of running; they simply are purchasing a long-sleeve t-shirt for $3. (Incidentally, the random draw is a "you have to be present to win" one. The first three runners whose names were drawn had left, much to the delight of those who remained and whose hopes of winning were thereby kept alive.)

Secondly, with temperature being nearly 90 degrees and the humidity best described as being brutal, another 50 or so runners opted not to run.

Thirdly, nearly 100 runners dropped out enroute because of the heat and humidity.

The times of those who did finish reflected the conditions. Most of those who ran last year had times which were one to three minutes slower this year.

Tim Boilard (Princeton) outlasted CMS teammate Richard Bolt (Pepperell) to claim his second consecutive Fallon Five first-place finish. Divisional CMS male winners included Kevin McGovern of West Boylston (master), Matt DePari of Worcester (junior) and Jim Impresscia of Leominster (senior).

Barbara McManus (Worcester) and Kathie Swanson (Millbury) finished 2-3 overall in the women's competition. Divisional CMS female winners were Carol Hurley of Spencer (master) and Zelda Schwartz of Worcester (senior).
