How does a very hilly 5-miler in Clinton draw nearly 300 runners? Other than the fact
that the Clinton Item does an outstanding job organizationally, there are two
reasons: (1) it was a Hockomock
Swamp Rat Grand
Prix
race; and (2) it was, as it has been in the past, very successful
in getting area juniors to compete. Nearly 50 out-of-the-area runners competed because of
the Grand Prix and over 50 age 19-and-under runners also competed.
Cindy Gaudere (Hudson) was the first female and placed 34th overall. Laura Beckwith
(Holden) was the first female senior, while Marjorie Rosiello (Shrewsbury), age 70, topped
the veterans' division (age 60+).
Bob Hodge (Clinton) was fourth overall and the first master, Andy Gallivan (Worcester)
was ninth overall and the first junior, and Peter Orni (Fitchburg) was second among
seniors.
