7th Annual Charity Five |
Looking at the runners lined up at the starting line, the race for first in the 7th annual running of the Charity Five (5M) seemed as if it would be a tight battle between two CMS members, Scott Clark of Gilmanton, NH and Richard Bolt of Lunenburg, MA. Therefore, it was no surprise when Scott and Richard ultimately placed 1-2 respectively. What was a surprise was the nearly two minute margin of victory for Scott.
An explanation for Richard's "failure" to challenge turned out to be a simple one. Four hours before the start of the Charity Five, he was at the starting of another race - the Pack Monadnock 10M in Wilton, NH, where he finished second to Dave Dunham. Pack Monadnock done, Richard drove south to Fitchburg for the Charity Five.
Andy Gallivan was the third CMS finisher, seventh overall and the second junior. Mike Niles was the second master and eighth overall, while Bob Girouard, Frank Scherer and Peter Orni were 1-2-3 among seniors. Jim Daley and Eddie Gallivan were 1-2 among veterans.
Mary Ryczek was both the first female senior and the first female master. Dianne VonVoorhis and Cheryl Powers were 2-3 behind Mary in the senior division.
