Worcester, MA, August 1, 1998

Given that entry forms were printed four days before the first race of the series was scheduled to be run, it was surprising that anyone materialized, let alone 23 runners. Of the 23, one dropped out with an injury and another, a CMS board member, managed to get lost twice before calling it quits. "I finally figured out that something was wrong when I hadn't seen another runner for over ten minutes and I had passed the 2-mile marker twice," he lamented.

In late-breaking news, an investigation has been launched to determine just who this board member was.  After all, said our intrepid reporter, if a running club Board Member gets lost in a race, just where is this member leading the club?  Eh?  Harrumph!

The first master, long-time CMS member Dave Greenslit of Worcester, had cycled to the Assumption College track planning to do a track workout. Just as he began the workout, he noticed a table being set up with attendant race materials. Curious, he stopped his run and asked what was happening. When told it was a cross country race, he bagged the workout and signed up for the race.

The course, which begins with a loop around a dirt track and finishes with a loop around the track, contains just about every type of terrain imaginable - dirt track, dirt roads, mud, grass ball fields, two-foot wide dirt paths through woods and several small hills.
