Yankee Homecoming 10 Miler
USATF-NE Championship
Newburyport - July 29th

Traditionally, whether it is because of its location in Newburyport (for many CMS members, Newburyport is near or at the end of the known universe) or because of the day of the week - Tuesday, the Yankee Homecoming 10Miler has proven to be the race at which CMS has had the most difficulty with respect to team scoring in USATF-NE Grand Prix races. Last year, two CMS teams finished first, one placed second, two captured third and one recorded a fourth. While most clubs would gladly settle for that set of finis hes, it was easily CMS's weakest of any of the seven Grand Prix races.

This year, however, proved to be the exception to the rule, as CMS clearly dominated with both the men's open and women's masters' teams placing first, the women's open, men's seniors' and women's seniors' teams taking second and the men's masters' team finishing third. No club came close to CMS in total points and no other club recorded more than one first-place finish. The CMS men's open team is now six for six in wins at Newburyport, having finished first every year since the Yankee Homecoming race gained championship status in 1992. This was also the 17th consecutive win dating back to 1994 in Grand Prix competition for the men's open team.

Scoring for CMS were Mike Nahom (New Milford, CT), Craig Fram (Plaistow, NH), Adam Hersh (Hanover, NH), Wayne Jacob (Mystic, CT) and Jim Garcia (Westford). Mike and Craig placed 4th and 5th in a very strong field, while Wayne, a CMS member since 1984, downscored from the masters' division. Adam was running his first Grand Prix race as a CMS member, while Jim has been competing for CMS in the Grand Prix since near the turn of the century (or so it seems). New member Todd Reeser (Macedon, NY), who placed 7th overall and was the 3rd CMS runner to finish, was not eligible to score because he is at present a resident of New York.

How impressive was the CMS women's masters' team? First, the team set an all-time USATF-NE Grand Prix 10M record for a women's masters' team. Second, if the top three finishers, Rebecca Stockdale-Woolley (Chaplin, CT), Marge Bellisle (Warren, RI) and Terri Martland (Newport, RI), who placed 2-3-4 among masters had failed to materialize for the race, CMS's next three runners, Sandy Lovejoy (Winchester), Sidney Letendre (Florence) and Mary Ryczek (Longmeadow), who was the second female senior in the race, would have as a team finished five minutes ahead of the second-place team. Third, competing in the women's open division, the team would have placed 4th, finishing behind only the Boston Athletic Association, CMS and the Boston Running Club.

Mimi Corcoran (Mendon), who placed 3rd overall in the women's division with a PR 58:00, combined with Marge and Terri, who downscored from the masters' division, to give CMS a second-place women's open team finish. Mary, Laura Beckwith (Holden) and Dianne Van Voorhis (Ashby) scored for the second-place women's seniors' team.

New club member John Boyle (Newburyport), who was second in the seniors' division, led the CMS men's seniors' team to its second-place finish. Also scoring were George Kasierski (Northbridge), who has been a CMS member since the late 1970's, and Glenn Sauder (Marlboro).

In the intensely competitive men's masters' division, CMS had to settle for third. Scoring were Wayne Jacob, Rich Ovian (Worcester), Jerry Learned (Hopkinton), Joe Hall (Newport) and John, who downscored from the seniors' division. The Yankee Homecoming 10M was held on Tuesday evening, July 29th. This edition of the newsletter went to the printer on Tuesday morning. How then are you reading about Yankee Homecoming? This article and the following results were put together on Wednesday morning and rushed to the printer as an add-on. Unfortunately, team results for the trial men's veterans (60+) competition were not available in time to be included. To members of the veterans' team, sorry! For those CMS members who neglected to indicate that CMS is the club of affiliation and for those dual members who competed for NMC teams, we may have missed you in the results.
