15th Tweed’s 5K

Worcester - March 15th

For a third consecutive year, Sean Livingston (Pawtucket, RI) blitzed the field to win Tweed’s 5K. Sean’s time of 14:51 was particularly impressive given that the temperature was in the mid-20’s and tough headwinds buffeted the field during the first half of the race. In addition to Sean, five other CMS members placed in the top ten: Geary Daniels (Dudley), third overall and first master; Kevin McGovern (West Boylston), fifth; Jerry Learned (Hopkinton), seventh and second master; Bill Gaudere (Hudson), eighth; and Adam Roche (Worcester), ninth and second junior.

Jackie Shakar (Worcester), Barbara McManus (Worcester), Ellen MacGilvary (Hudson), Karen McGahie (Boylston), Cindy Gaudere (Hudson) and Wendy Sokolowski (W. Boylston) finished 1-2-3-4-5-6 in the women’s competition. Katie Stomski (Dudley), age 12, was the first female junior.

Although the newsletter staff is not absolutely certain, we believe that Bob Girouard (Fitchburg) and Karl Tuomivaara (Paxton) placed first respectively among seniors and veterans, and Bev Savage (Worcester) was the first female senior. Tweed’s only recognizes three divisions: junior; open; and master (that is, 40 to infinity).

And, from the truly possessed at age 68 department, Ed Sato (Worcester), in running Tweed’s, completed his 18th race of 1997. He also completed his 19th on the same day! Ed left Worcester after finishing Tweed’s, which began just after 11:00AM, and made his way to Lowell and finished the Hynes Irish Feet Are Runnin’ 5M, which began at 1:00PM. There was some post-race confusion with respect to the two-person team competition in the coed and female junior divisions.

The following are the correct results. Note: Only teams including at least one CMS member are listed. No CMS members finished in any of the top three men’s open teams and no female masters’ teams competed.
