Attelboro - October 5th
CMS Quadruples in Team Competition Yet Again.
CMS did it at the Salem Heritage 10K in early August. CMS did it at the Brewery Exchange 5K in Lowell in early September. And CMS did it again in early October at Ro-Jack's 8K, winning not one, not two, not three, but four of seven possible team titles.
When the final results were tallied, CMS topped the men's open, women's masters, women's seniors and men's veterans divisions.
For the men's open team, the win provided a measure of revenge for a disappointing second place finish to the always tough Greater Lowell Road Runners at the Brewery Exchange 5K. That second place finish broke an eighteen race USATF-NE Grand Prix Championship win streak by CMS which dated back to 1994. With a number of team members who usually compete in the Grand Prix unavailable due to injuries, CMS turned to a large contingent of its cross country and track athletes to meet strong challenges from GLRR and the Rhode Island based New Balance Coastal Track Club. With Craig Fram (Plaistow, NH), the individual Grand Prix leader in the men's open division, finishing a strong seventh in a field laden with foreign talent, CMS topped GLRR by 1:07 and NBCTC by 2:07. Finishing within 28 seconds of Craig were four of the club's cross country/track athletes - Killian Lonergan (Somerville), 8th, Rusty Snow (Watertown), 10th, Darin Shearer (Somerville), 12th, and Mark Mayall (Acton), 16th.
The CMS women's masters' team continues unbeaten in the 1997 Grand Prix with its fifth consecutive lopsided win, topping the second-place BAA, 1:31:29 to 1:37:15. The team was led by Mary Lammi (Spencer), who finished second among female masters to Diane Leger of Canada. Also scoring, as they have all year long in the Grand Prix, were Marge Belisle (Warren, RI) and Terri Martland (Newport, RI).
Mary Ryczek (Longmeadow), who placed second to Sue Gustafson of the Liberty Athletic Club in the female seniors' division, once again led the CMS lady seniors to a Grand Prix win, 1:52:33 to 1:56:54 over the Cambridge Sports Union. Also scoring, as they have all year, were Laura Beckwith (Holden) and Dianne Von Voorhis (Ashby).
For the second consecutive Grand Prix race, Jim Daley (New Ipswich, NH) finished second to Bill Riley (Marston Mills) in the veterans' division. While Bill is a CMS member, he did not score for CMS, as he competes for the club's triathlon team, the TriAngles, while running for the Cape Cod Athletic Club. Fortunately, it did not make a difference with respect to the seniors' team, as Jim combined with Stu Thurston (Boylston) and Otto Lies (Holden) for yet another CMS first-place finish.
A very young and road inexperienced CMS women's open team finished a strong second to the BAA. Scoring were Mimi Corcoran (Mendon), Jen Waeger (Marlborough), Mary Lammi, who downscored from the masters' division, Amory Rowe (Cambridge) and and Stacey Mosley (Franklin).
While less than one minute out of first, the CMS men's masters' team placed third behind the Tri-Valley Front Runners and GLRR. Scoring were Wayne Jacob (Mystic, CT), 2nd master, Geary Daniels (Dudley), 4th, Cliff Matthews (Bellingham), Jerry Learned (Hopkinton) and Joe Hall (Newport, RI).
CMS placed 4th in the men's seniors' competition. Scoring were Jim Daley, who downscored from the veterans' division, George Kasierski (Northbridge), Glenn Sauder (Marlborough), Peter Orni (Fitchburg) and Ray Boutotte (Pepperell).
As is often the case in Grand Prix competition, CMS was the only club to field teams in all seven divisions. Finally, of all the statistics, the most impressive is that 51 runners - over 5% of the field - competed as members of CMS.
