A year ago when Ken Robichaud, president of the North Medford Club
announces plans for an early July marathon and half-marathon in Fitchburg, the chances for
success were deemed not very good by many area race "experts." With respect to
the marathon, the skeptics were correct, as only 36 finished. However, the half-marathon
had a very respectable 127 finishers. This year, the marathon was dropped and the
"Fitchburg Half-Marathon" was run the day after July 4th. The result - 151
completed the race. Karma Tousignant (Fitchburg), who placed 21st
overall, was the first female, while Karen Palmer (Fitchburg) finished
2nd. Top CMS finisher was Peter Blomquist (Worcester), who placed 6th
overall and was the second master. Also in the top ten were Dave Birse
(Hancock, NH) and Jerry Campbell (Hubbardston). Paul McDermott
(Fitchburg) topped the veterans' division.
