For the first 15 years or so of its existence, the Charlton Old Home Day Race was a triple-loop 20K which featured three climbs up the incomparable Mugged Hill, a one-mile plus hill which dwarfs in steepness anything found in all but the tiniest fraction of road races.
The Web Guy will attest to the steepness of this hill...He once experimented with walking up the hill - and passed at least five people who were still running! Now the race features a figure-eight configuration. This allows the spectators to see the runners at the start, in the middle, and at the end of the race. Nice deal.
Geary Daniels (Dudley) won for the third straight year and the fourth time in five tries. In the process, Geary also topped the masters' field for the third time in three efforts. Dave Marcinowski (Barre) placed second and was the first junior, while Paul Hargreaves (W. Brookfield) was third overall and second master. Ed Sato (Worcester), Matt Smith (Auburn) and Del Levia (New Braintree) were 1-2-3 among veterans.
For the second year in a row, Mary Lammi (Spencer), who placed ninth overall, was the first female overall and the first female master. Sarah Clifford (Grafton), Laura Beckwith (Holden) and Marjorie Rosiello (Shrewsbury) placed first respectively in the f emale junior, senior and veteran divisions.
Check out some of the celebrities who showed up for this challenging race: Marcinowski, mentioned above, is a local gun in High School circles. The famous comic and entertainer Steve Allen was 26th and did not show his age in the least. James Kirk, Captain of the Enterprise, stopped off for a little R&R and placed 37th.. As we all know, Jim came from Iowa and only works in outer space. Beam me up, Scotty!
