CMS Quadruples, But . . .
For the second consecutive USATF-NE Grand Prix Championship, CMS won four of the seven team
championships, but for the first time since 1994 the men's open team failed to finish first. CMS placed first in the women's master, women's senior, men's master and men's veteran divisions. Led by Mary Lammi (Spencer), who was 7th overall among female finishers, the women's masters' team took 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places in the masters' division. In addition to Mary, scoring were Marge Bellisle (Warren, RI), Sandy Lovejoy (Winchester, MA), Sidney Letendre (Northampton) and Terri Martland (Newport, RI).
In an unprecedented occurence for CMS, the five scorers for the women's masters' team were also the five scorers for the women's open team. A combination of injuries and the fact that the Focus On Women 5K was run on the same day as the Brewery Exchange left the open team depleted. As an open team, the masters finished fourth. Mary Ryczek (Longmeadow), 3rd among seniors, Laura Beckwith (Holden) and Dianne Von Voorhis (Ashby) combined to give CMS the win in the women's seniors' competition.
After 18 consecutive Grand Prix wins, the men's open team finally failed to win, finishing second to the host GLRR. Lacking was the usual CMS depth due to a combination of several team members being injured, five more competing in Europe for U.S. Mountain and 100K teams and others preparing for the cross-country season. Scoring were Craig Fram (Plaistow, NH), 4th overall, Ted Towse (Holyoke), 6th, Sean Livingston (Pawtucket, RI), 9th, Sandu Rebenciuc (Springfield), 13th, and Byrne Decker (Yarmouth, ME), 15th.
For the second consecutive Grand Prix race, the men's masters' team outran its two chief rivals, the Tri-Valley Front Runners and the Greater Lowell Road Runners. Scoring were Wayne Jacob (Mystic, CT), 2nd master, Buddy Bostick (Newburyport), 3rd, Geary Daniels (Dudley), 4th, Rich Ovian (Worcester) and Jerry Learned (Hopkinton). Finishing third was the seniors' team which was led once again by John Boyle (Newburyport). Also scoring were Jim Daley (New Ipswich, NH), who downscored from the veterans' division, George Kasierski (Northbridge), Peter Orni (Fitchburg) and Joe Drugan ( Hopedale). Jim, who was second among all age 60+ competitors, led the veterans' team to its first-place finish. Ironically, Jim was second to a CMS member, Bill Riley of Marston Mills, MA. However, Bill competes for the CMS triathlon team, the TriAngles, while also competing on the roads for the Cape Cod Athletic Club. Also scoring were Paul McDermott (Fitchburg) and "Stu" - (Boylston).
