| The 14th running of the Wachusett Reservoir Deer Run featured course records for
the first 39
finishers as they raced against the clock and Extratropical Storm Noel. What's
this Extratropical
nonsense?? Anything with Tropical in the name and Extra to boot would make you
think that it was
going to be a warm day, right? Not on this day though with the temperatures in
the upper 30's.
Yep, QUITE tropical if you ask me!
Anyway, the rain mercifully held off until the last of the runners were done and heading back towards the warmth of the school. After the runners crossed the finish line of the new course, many were heard exclaiming how brutal the hills were on each of the out and back spurs. Some were even looking for the Professor and Stu to let them know how sadistic they had to be to design this course. Sounds like a perfect course to me! One that would easily make it into a Rat Series if he were to have another one coming up. On the opening out and back section, there were a number of runners to go off course up at the lead and CMS member Karen McGahie running on what could be called her Home Course, even though she only ran the opening section once before the race for a warmup, correctly navigated the group back on track. And what did she get for her troubles? Four of the runners re-passed her. Chivalry was not apparent today! CMS Men's Open runner Tim Mahoney came out from Northampton to lead the pack across the line. Karen was first on the Women's side. Other notable club finishers were Byron Deane, first in the Men's Masters, Howard Bottomly, first in the Men's Veterans, Alice McKeon, First in the Women's Masters, Tom Fitzgerald, First Men's Senior as well as First Past CMS President, Linda Usher, First Women's Senior and First Whitin 5 Race Director. Thanks to ALL the volunteers that came out today and big THANKS to Dick and Stu for another great year over at the Deer Run! |
