| The weather forecasters got an "F" for this day's forecast. They had said it would be in the 60's and sunny, with possible showers in the afternoon, pretty consistently, from about three days before race day up until the day before. Race day dawned drizzly, foggy, and with the distinct autumn chill in the air. I managed to arrive at the race site before the gun, this year, but did not recognize any of the other club members there. I last ran this race in 2002, on the same course (I believe), in 72:xx. With the advice that we were to follow the orange streamers until the first water crossing, and the blue streamers thereafter, we were sent into the woods with a bang. There were occasional places where the streamers were not as clear to the runners as the organizers hoped it would be, and occasions where crowds of runners milled around looking for the trail. There were also a couple or 3 water crossings that I had forgotten about, which I would have enjoyed much more had I brought a spare pair of shoes for the drive home. I spent more time huffing and puffing up the steep hills than I spent wondering if I were on the right trail, so in that respect it was a success. John Kinnee was the overall winner in a brisk time of 58:54 for 8 miles. |
