BGA Scholarship 5K Road Race
Boylston MA, May 26 by Robert Seed

To the surprise of no one, Memorial Day 2003 dawned overcast with a foreboding "rain, heavy at times” forecast. Despite a continuation of one of the wettest springs that I can remember, we descended on the Boylston Common determined to hold a 5- K road race. Anticipating rain and selecting a spot close to the finish line Lisa, Jan, Evelyn, Karen and myself set up the CMS tent to begin registration. About 15 minutes later a light rain began. At the 9:30 start the rain was steadier though not totally unbearable. Of course I spent most of those 45 minutes prior to the start under the tent SO my perception of the conditions might be a tad inaccurate. By the time the first runners turned the corner onto Church Street it was pouring and the growing puddle rivers conjured up memories of a not long ago Sunday in March when we ventured around the reservoir for Stu’s 30K race. Okay, enough talk about the conditions, let’s get to the results. Brent Leighton of Worcester took I St place with a time of 18:16. CMS was well represented among the 89 finishers with Pat McCormick (19:03), Steve Quitadamo (19:22). Karen McGahie (19:31). and Kevin Fallon (19:43) nailing down the 2nd through 5th place spots respectively. Many thanks to CMS members Jan McNamara, Lisa Mentzer, Karen Lemerise. Evelyn Dolan, and one gentleman whose name I did not get (sorry L) for the tent as well for registration, timing and scoring. We are also grateful to The Boylston Police Department, Charlie Erickson, Eric Tobiesen, Christine and Kristin Mazeika, Barbara, Mary, Dan and Caitlin Seed for their on the course help
