The Great Track Myths

So you’ve heard about track, and thought hey, “there is no way I can do that!”. Well, I am going to tell you, you can. It’s easy! Do you know that CMS offers free expert coached workouts for “ALL” it members? Well if you don’t, then you haven’t been doing your reading lately or just been living under a rock. Every Tuesday and Wednesday nights there are track practices held at either Fitchburg State College (Tuesdays) or Worcester State College (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). And you’ll be surprised at who’s at them! Everyone from brand new members and runners to seasoned runners and long-time members.
Myth : Track is only for the fast, elite level runners.
Fact: All runners of every level can reap the many benefits of track practice. Yes, track is designed to help runners hone their speed skills, but it also helps them build strength, endurance, improve lactate thresholds and increases overall fitness levels. These facts are true whether you are a 5:00 minute miler or a 12:00 minute miler. Our coaches help tailor their workouts to meet each individuals needs while still keeping every runner feeling part of the “group” practice.

Myth: Track is boring. All you do is run around in circles!

Fact: This, of course, is totally false! While some practices may take place on the actual track (i.e. running 200’s, 400’s, 800’s and 1600’s repeats), warmups and cool downs are usually done off track. Dale Ames, our Tuesday’s beginner coach, likes to mix it up by having his crew do everything from fartlek runs, intervals, middle and long distance tempo runs, etc., in addition to the traditional repeats. Similar kinds of workouts can be seen with Mark Perrone’s groups as well. While the workouts are varied to provide interest, you also have many other fellow members which are motivating and inspiring to be around, as well as to socialize with after the practices.

Myth: Running to increase speed will lead to injuries.

Fact: By attending the practices and getting “professional, sound, and experienced” advice, you will have the proper tools, knowledge and plans to achieve your goals, while highly limiting the possibilities of injuries-that’s assuming you follow the advice given. But for those of us with hard heads, who do venture off course and get injured, our coaches are also well versed in injury management to help you get back out running quickly and safely.

Well now that you know YOU CAN DO IT! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? GET OUT THERE AND HAVE SOME FUN! Let’s take a peak at those who already know the truth! Meet the coaches on page 5.
