==== News ====

There was one big name on the European track circuit last week: Noah, as in Ngeny, the 20-year old Kenyan who opened his season with a mile win at the Prefontaine Classic. On Saturday evening in Nice, Ngeny turned in the second-fastest 1000m ever run, less than half a second behind Sebastian Coe's world record. Then on Wednesday evening in Paris, he went after Hicham el Guerrouj's record at 1500m but ended up with "only" the third-fastest all-time. Ngeny is now second on the all-time 1000m and mile lists and third at 1500m... before reaching legal drinking age in the U.S.

Right before that Paris meet, there was some dispute among sprinters concerning the fairness of the IAAF pay scale, in which 100m world champion Marion Jones actually took the position that she was getting paid too much.

Meanwhile, on the home front, USATF CEO Craig Masback pondered the lessons of the hugely successful soccer Women's World Cup.

========== Training Tip ========

One secret to both increasing and maintaining strength is periodization, using different training programs for different periods of the year and a series of progressions or steps to move from one level of fitness to another. >

=============== Health and Fitness ===============

Margarine vs. Butter: After feeding 36 men and women six different diets for five weeks each, researchers have found that soft, tub-style or squeeze bottle margarine is better for your arteries than butter or harder type margarine. Hard, stick-type margarine contains unhealthy trans fats, while softer margarine contains much less of this fat.

Eat Fish, Prevent Cancer: When researchers compared the fish consumption of more than 10,000 hospitalized Italian cancer patients with that of nearly 8,000 people without cancer, they found that those who had consumed 2 or more servings of fish per week had a lower risk for esophageal, stomach, colon, rectum, and pancreatic cancers than those who had avoided fish. The high levels of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

========== Editor's Advice ============

It's important to start hydrating the day before a race. Just be sure to stop taking in fluids 2 hours before bedtime, so you don't have to make a bathroom visit in the middle of the night. (You'll be anxious about the race, and may not get back to sleep!) --Beth M. Eck, associate editor

============= Words to think about =============

The experts are always telling us to 'Listen to your body!' But if I listened to my body, I'd live on toffee pops and port wine. Don't tell me to listen to my body... It's trying to turn me into a blob!
--Roger Robinson, New Zealand masters runner
