========== Training Tip ========

You can cross a distance training barrier by very gradually increasing the length of your longest run. To do so, you need to do two things: run slower, and rest the day before and the day after.

False negative: Because water is poorly absorbed by the body, your urine may appear clear or pale yellow during the first few hours after a vigorous workout, but you may still be dehydrated. Here's a tip: hydrate with sports drinks that contain some sodium instead of water. This will help your body better absorb the fluid, and keep it from running right through you.

Help smokers quit: According to a recent study from Brown University, people who exercise are more likely to kick the smoking habit. Also, women who exercised while trying to quit smoking gained only about half the weight as women who tried to quit but didn't exercise

========== Editor's Advice ============

To make your hot-weather running more enjoyable, wear light clothing, and keep it wet. Light, synthetic clothing will allow sweat to evaporate more quickly than cotton clothing will. Evaporation cools you off. Increase this effect by pouring water on your shirt at regular intervals throughout the run. -- Eileen Portz-Shovlin, senior editor

============= Words to think about ============

The music of the marathon is a powerful martial strain, one of those tunes of glory. It asks us to forsake pleasures, to discipline the body, to find courage, to renew faith and to become one's own person, utterly and completely. -- George Sheehan
