One road championship was contested, the women's 5-K on the road, and Cheri Goddard-Kenah took the tape after years of trying. The upset: defending champion Lynn Jennings, a multi-time winner, was left third.

========== Training Tip ========

If you can avoid injury, you can run long distances for the longest time. Defensive running may be the best training technique anyone can use.

=============== Health and Fitness ===============

Fat may boost immunity: If you restrict the fat in your diet to 17 percent of your total calories or fewer and you run 40 miles a week or more, you may be compromising your immunity, according to a University of Buffalo study. A more moderate 30 percent fat diet, however, will keep you healthy.

Widen your belt: If you're in the market for a treadmill, compare the sizes of the belts on the various machines you are considering. The smaller the belt on a treadmill, the more likely you will injure yourself by falling, according to a study from the Mayo Clinic.

========== Editor's Advice ============

New runners often try to run every day. That's often a mistake, as it's asking a lot to go from nonrunner to everyday runner. A better way is to start off going every other day. Or better still, try to get out twice during the week, then once on the weekend. Once you're locked into this schedule, you can always increase frequency. -- Amby Burfoot, editor

============= Words to think about ============

"God has given me the ability. The rest is up to me. Believe. Believe. Believe..." -- Billy Mills, an entry in his training diary prior to his upset Olympic gold medal 10,000-meter win in the Tokyo Olympics

============= Corrections ============

A number of our readers pointed out that we called Ron Clarke a "New Zealand" distance star in last week's Extr@, when he is in fact Australian. We regret the confusion.
