The inside scoop on New York City Marathon coverage, George W. Bush runs into trouble, Tegla Loroupe receives Bikila award, and how exercise helps reduce breast cancer.

==== News ====

Anybody who's run on the roads for a little while has dodged something while running, from puddle-splashes to objects thrown from cars. (One training partner of ours was hit by a pocket Bible. We are not making this up.) Presidential Candidate George W. Bush proved he does everything Texas-sized by dodging flying debris from an overturned trailer on his daily run in Austin.

Usually the Kenyans are racing against the Ethiopians, but this week they shared a headline. Kenyan Tegla Loroupe, women’s world-record holder for the marathon, received the Bikila Award (named for the late Ethiopian Olympic champion, himself a former world record holder) in recognition of her achievements on the roads.

 In the weekend between the Chicago Marathon and the New York City Marathon, the major headlines came from the Tulsa Run, a 15-K, where the big battle was the men's masters. The marathon-of-the-week was Silicon Valley, won by last year's runner-up Simon Sawe and defending champion Veronica Kanga.

========== Training Tip ========

The marathon requires humility and an open mind. The marathon can be unpredictable, and some days just aren't your days. But despite the risks, you have to be willing to invest 100 percent of your energy into the event. -- from Joan Benoit Samuelson and Gloria Averbuch’s Running for Women, page 105. =============== Health and Fitness ==============

 Out-run cancer: Women who exercised for 7 or more hours a week had a 20 percent lower breast cancer risk compared to those who worked out for less than an hour a week, according to a recent study.

Lose weight: A recent study of 2,900 adults found that people who consumed more fiber weighed about 8 pounds less than those who ate little fiber. Try to eat about 30 grams a day from whole grain cereal and bread, vegetables, fruit, and beans.

========== Editor's Advice ============

If you’re making big changes to your running program, do it gradually and change only one aspect at a time. Otherwise, you’re more vulnerable to injury. For instance, increase your mileage (slowly), or the intensity of your speed sessions, or the frequency of your runs…but not all three at once. -- Adam Bean, RW managing editor

============= Words to think about =============

  Fall running for me is vacation time: time to get off the road and into the woods. Then your running turns into a way of getting somewhere, of taking you to nice places so you can look at beautiful stuff. Forget about distance, measure your run by time alone: half the available minutes going out, half coming back. The workout will be just as good. -- excerpt from "The Elements of Effort" by John Jerome
