Taking your pulse, drinking wine, watching your calcium, Tegla and Regina and women’s running

==== News ====

It's hard to ignore Tegla Loroupe. Sure, such a tiny person could vanish in a crowd, but in recent years Tegla has been so fast she's required men to run with her since no women can challenge her. Which is why her new marathon world record in Berlin last Sunday came as no surprise; after all, she held the old record. And now that she has your attention, Tegla has some things to say about the Kenyan national federation.

More surprising in Berlin was the men's race: after becoming the home of the men's world record last year, this year they became the first marathon ever to have two runners under 2:07.

At the opposite end of the road-racing spectrum, the fleet of foot reported to Manhattan for the Fifth Avenue Mile. The elite field was somewhat reduced due to lack of a sponsor, but our writer Peter Gambaccini was on hand for the races of the day, including watching his own event record (in the All-Stars mile) broken.

========== Training Tip ========

With free weights you get a more balanced workout, because when you do a set of arm curls with a dumbbell, for instance, you're also working other muscle groups in the area. When you use weight machines, however, you work only the muscle group you want to train, so you get a more precise workout. -- from Ken Sparks and Dave Kuehls, The Runners Book of Training Secrets, page 24. =============== Health and Fitness ===============

Make calcium add up: Your body can only absorb up to 500 milligrams of calcium at a time. So if you megadose at one meal, your body excretes more than it absorbs. Try to eat a calcium-rich food at every meal, spreading your intake throughout the day.

The power of wine: To get the same antioxidant power of one glass of red wine, you'd have to drink or eat 20 glasses of apple juice, 12 glasses white wine, 7 glasses of orange juice, 5 servings of onion, 5 servings of eggplant, 4 apples, 3 1/2 glasses of blackcurrant juice, 3 1/2 glasses of beer or 2 cups of green tea.

========== Editor's Advice ============

Take your pulse every morning before you get out of bed. Over time, you’ll learn what’s normal for you. A higher than normal resting heart rate means you’re overtraining, so back off on those days your pulse is high. – Parker Morse, RW electronic editor

============= Words to think about =============

There is a time to run and there is a time to rest. It is the true test of the runner to get them both right. -- Noel Carroll, collegiate standout at Villanova and Irish Olympian who coaches and writes for the Irish Runner magazine
