Dear NE Clubs:As you may have heard by now, I am producing an ultra-marathon called the Chancellor Challenge 100K Road Race which (includes relay teams) on Saturday, October 9, 1999. It is all happening very fast. I was approached by the Chancellor Corporation (a truck leasing company) only a few months ago to develop this event. They very much wanted to see the event happen this fall and only in Boston. Whereas I realize that most runners have made their plans and that other quality events are scheduled around the same time period, it was either say yes, I'll do my best, or no and miss a unique opportunity.
So, here I am. I am doing my very best to try to create a first time event with minimal lead time, but, plans are finally coming together nicely. The Chancellor Challenge is for both individuals as well as relay teams (at least for this year). I am hoping to attract at least 50 individuals running the full 100K solo, as well as 25 teams participating in the relay.
The race will start at 7AM and there will be a 12 hour (7PM) time limit imposed. A total of $20,000 in prize money will be awarded in the individual division and $5,000 for relay teams. All the information on the race, the prize money breakdown and entry information can be found on our web site at http://www.coolrunning.com/chancellor/ .
The Chancellor Challenge will benefit the Jimmy Fund of Boston. The Chancellor Corporation has committed to raise a minimum of $100,000 for the Jimmy Fund. Currently, we are planning to start and finish the race near the Royal Sonesta Hotel along the Charles River. The course will consist of 10 out-and-back, horseshoe-shaped loops from the Sonesta, over the Mass Avenue Bridge, to the Hatch Shell (and beyond) and back.
Whereas the course will be open to pedestrians, we will be doing our best to maintain as clear a course as is possible with volunteers and signage. There is a slight possibility we may relocate the start and finish over to the Boston side of the river near the Hatch Shell - we are currently finalizing all these plans.
There will be three main tents set up with aid, refreshments, medical, massage, timing, entertainment - one at each of the turn-arounds and one halfway down the loop (which will be able to be twice, once going out and once coming back), thus making up 40 stations for the 100K. I am also finalizing all the pre and post race activities including the location of race registration, all which will be made available by the middle of next week.
I have been fortunate to have many experts working with me on this project including Dan Brannen, Don Allison, Steve Vaitones, Marja Bakker, Jim Garcia, Jeff Washburn, Andy Milroy, Katie Breen, Mike Thompson and many others. Dan and Don are working on inviting many of the best ultramarathon runners in the world and we have a number of elite runners already committed. Steve is handling the teams, so feel free to contact him directly at the USAT&F office anytime. The Chancellor Challenge will also be making a contribution to the USAT&F-NE.
I am writing to you to inform you of three ways your club can get involved:
- Provide 10-20 volunteers to help out during the day in return for a donation to your club;
- Enter one or more competitive teams;
- Enter teams and use the event as a final long training run for those members preparing for an upcoming marathon (eg. have a few members run 20K-40K each).
Again, I realize that this is short notice and I apologize for that. However, if we can meet our modest expectations for this inaugural year, this event could eventually become both a major team relay event in the heart of Boston as well as one of the top ultra-marathons in the world. The Chancellor Corporation intends for this event to be around for a long time to come and your support in this critical first year can help ensure that that will indeed happen.
Please feel free to email me back ( dmse@dmsesports.com ) or call me at my home office (978-774-3842) or at my office at the Boston Marathon (617-236-1652) anytime if you have any questions, suggestions, comments or need any additional information. Let me know if you want me or Steve to send you any team information in the mail. Thanks for your time
Regards...Dave McGillivray
