I am glad to hear someone else look at high school cross country like I do. I have the privilege to help the local high school team and coach. This usually involves getting splits and keeping a idea of the team score. We enjoy seeing how our team is doing compared to other teams we are competing against.
There is no doubt in my mind that scores-in-progress would be great. There are some courses where you do not see the runners for some time. A monitor or score board would be great to keep the spectators up with what is going on. Then having an on-the-spot unofficial score at the finish would give the team competition much more interest.
Thank you for bringing this into the spotlight. The more we promote the score keeping idea the more likely someone with the technology and skill will implement these ideas. I personally believe that cross country is one of the best places to introduce young people to running for a lifetime. It naturally leads into road racing in the future.
