RACE_SCOREBOARD.JPG (7633 bytes) We do have instant results at our home XC meets.  We built a 5 foot by 9 foot scoreboard. Each school name is on plastic card hung on the board with "C" hook. As the runners cross the finish line a place number is slotted by their school. Instant results. Fans flock to the scoreboard after the race.

The design is quite simple and inexpensive: one sheet of plywood. We originally used cuphooks for the place numbers but had difficulty during windy weather, so we now use plastic, self-adhesive sleeves, five for the scoring runners, followed by a wider sleeve for a team score, then two more slots for the rest of the team. The design works best for events with limited entries, usually seven per team. It helps to staff the scoreboard with 2-4 people who understand xc and xc scoring.

We also stress that the scoreboard results are unofficial but do provide immediate feedback to the spectators and participants as to relative placement.
