While at the conclusion of the cross country season, a large group of the Central Mass Striders Running Club went back to the drawing board and to their preparation for the upcoming year on the roads, a small group of hardy souls attacked the indoor track circuit. Very quietly CMS has become a force to be reckoned with on the track. Below you will find a list of the majority of the CMS performances from this past indoor season.
Kristen Beaney continued to improve and is on her way to becoming one of the Central Mass Striders' greatest athletes. After concluding 1996 by finishing 9th at the US Cross-Country National Championships in December, Kristen is having an outstanding 1997: she ran one of the fastest (indoor) 5000 meters ever by an American in January (15:50.11); qualified for the World Cross Country Championships team in February; and finished 2nd at the Jacksonville 15K in March. At press time, her 5000 meter time was ranked first among Americans by Track & Field News.
Other athletes making appearances at National-level races included Darren Shearer (Mile) and June Parks (800), both of whom competed at the US National Indoor Track Championships in Atlanta. The first outdoor track meets will take place in late March and early April; CMS will be represented throughout the spring and early summer at not only local meets, but also at such prestigious events as the Raleigh Relays (March), the Mt. SAC Relays (April), the Penn Relays (April), and the US National Outdoor Track Championships (June).
