The spring and early summer saw many CMS athletes achieve breakthrough performances on the outdoor oval. Though inclement weather hindered training in the early going (the Crusader Classic was run in near-hurricane-like conditions; the weather at the NU Men's Meet was much better: it merely stunk), PRs and quality racing were the rule throughout the season. The highlights were Kristin Beaney's 32:33 win at Mt. SAC and Darrin Shearer's 8:37 steeple at Northeastern, each time guaranteeing entry into the US National Championships.
The Northeastern University (MetroWest) Twilight Series has consistently been one of the top sequence of outdoor meets in the country, and 1997 was no exception as athletes from around the US competed and attempted to qualify for National and World championships. CMS was well-represented, and PRs were recorded by Mark Mayall and Bill Callahan (mile, 5000), Pat Callahan (mile, 3000, 5000), Shearer (1500, Steeplechase), Maurits van der Veen (1500, 5000), Jennifer Waeger (800, mile), Sandu Rebenciuc (1500), Frank Elms (3000). Rusty Snow, Mayall, and Pat Callahan all made their 10K (track) debuts, Snow running a very controlled 30:05. Though Andy Collins' injury was naturally a disappointment, he still contributed to one of the fastest post-collegiate performances by a New England team when CMS finished third in the Olympic Development 4x800 Relay at Penn.
Beaney and Shearer (US) and Babcock (Canada) all competed at National Championships, Beaney and Babcock narrowly missing spots on the Worlds teams as they each finished fourth in their 10,000 and 5000 races, respectively.
Planning for the cross-country season -- as well as indoor and outdoor track -- has already begun, and the CMS men's team will be amongst the favorites for the XC Association crown.

* The participants have agreed that since they'd all run faster intervals in pratice, the times should be stricken from memory, and the meet itself never discussed again in decent society.
