Dave's Monthly Update

May, 2006
Dave Dunham

The miles and the races continue to pile up.  I’m starting to feel like I’m getting in shape (I’m 618 miles ahead of last year at this time), although my times haven’t really proven that out J

May Total = 361 miles, no days off, 5 races.

This was my biggest month since December of 2002!  Boy, have I been injured a lot…

May 9 & May 12 are two of the three days that I have never missed running on in my entire running life.

Total for the year: 1,432 miles (9.48 average per day).

Total lifetime: 94,745 miles (9.44 average per day).

The five races this month included two mountain, two trail, and one cross-country.  Seven Sisters’ was kind of fun, running with Dan and Rob and just trying to not get hurt.  It had been 15 years since I last ran that course and the deciding factor was Paul Low stating “if for no other reason, run it for the geological uniqueness”.  Prospect Mountain and the Mudlsinger trail race looked like possible victories.  Neither was to be as both were second place performances.  Prospect was a 30 second loss (top 40+) and for Mudslinger I brought Dan along which meant there was no way I’d win (2nd overall and 2nd 40+).  I’m hoping that at Northfield I will close the gap on Dan.  The Wachusett Mountain / Trav’s trail (cross-country) race always makes for a fun double.  Wachusett is probably my least favorite of the Mountain circuit races.  It is just too short and too fast for me to run well at.  I ended up 4th (top 40+) at Wachusett but places 2-4 went off course and ended up running short.  This was the 11th time I raced Wachusett, it trails only Mt Washington (16 times) as the race I’ve done the most times.  Trav’s was hot but not humid like the day before at Wachusett.  I had a decent race, running 10 seconds faster than last year and taking 10th overall (2nd 40+).  Cathy ran Trav’s as did my Sister Rose.  It was Rose’s second race ever and her first trail race.  She seemed to be having fun when I saw her out on the course.

Next up:  A busy June and July, coming up.  I have 11 races in the next 7 weeks, including three races that I’m directing or co-directing.  Should be a blast!

Looking back:

5 years ago – Triple raced the final weekend of April, including racing the Grand Prix 10k in Dedham then jumping right in my car and driving to Groton.  Ran over 1.5 minutes faster at Trav’s than I did this year.  Note to Jim, that is what I meant about speed being the first thing to go.

15 years ago – National championships in Wheeling was one of my best races ever.  Steve Jones won in 1:03 (it was 80 degrees and 100% humidity).  I was third US, my best finish in a Non-Ultra US championship.

20 years ago – I was recovering from getting my knee scoped twice.  Just starting to run.

25 years ago – Junior year in High School.  I threw in a rare road race and lost by 10 seconds, but won a pair of New Balance 420’s and picked up a 5m PR.  Patti Catalano set a new US record for 10K when she won the Crescent city classis in New Orleans.  It was the 11th record Catalano set in an 18 month period.  In the 1981 Boston Marathon local runner Gary Wallace was the first non-Sub 2:20 with his 65th place finish in 2:20:01, teammate (and later GLRR teammate) Brad Hurst was 95th in 2:22:16.  An incredible 298 finishers broke 2:30 (and 2,839 broke 3 hours), so maybe the talk of a U.S. resurgence this year is a bit premature.
