The USATF NE mountain circuit moved to Vermont on June 11 for the fourth
race in the six- race circuit. Paul Low (CMS) led the way as 80-degre
temperatures and oppressive humidity had many running conservatively ove
the 3.7 mile course from the base to summit of Ascutney Mountain
Low the 2004 US mountain champion took the lead at about halfway and powered to the fourth fastest time ever at Ascutney. His 29:27 had him thirtee
seconds clear of Eric Morse (CMS). Morse is the course record holder an
his 29:50 was the seventh fastest time ever, and a new course record for 40
runners. Mike Casner formerly held the record at 31:26. Dave Dunham (CMS)Peter Orni (CMS) was the top 60+ in 45:03,
which is the third best ever for that age group. Suzy West (CSU) took the win in 38:00. Here time was the fourth fastest ever run. She also topped the 40+ age group, running the second fastest time; only her course record of 36:52 is faster. Donna Smyth (CSU) was second in the 40+ running the eight fastest time, she now holds four of the top eight times for the 40+ age group. In USATF Team competition, the Central Mass. Striders took the victory with a perfect six points (three runners score based on finishing position). CMS took the top six spots in the race. The North Medford Club and Moose Milers and Marathoners battled for second with NMC taking it 28 to 35 points. The NMC also tied CMS in the 40+ competition, both scoring 28 points. NMC won the 50+ team competition with 95 points to the Gate City Striders 106. In the series thus far Paul Low leads the men's open with 295.83 points with Kevin Tilton close behind with 292.62 points. Dave Dunham leads the 40+ crowd with 356.36 points, with Dave Audet (NMC) second with 332.95 pints. They currently have the most points in any category, with the maximum bein 400 points. Suzy West leads the women's 40+ (and has the most points fo any women's category) with 313.86 points. Donna Smyth is second with 286.6 points. The women's open leader is Kathy Hurst with 282.19 points Jacqueline Keith leads the 50+ with 199.84 points. Richard Stockale (MMM is the top 50+ man with 280.88 points. Eldon Burkinshaw (GCS) leads the 60 with 246.03 points, and Paul McDermott (NMC) leads the 70+ with 141.1 points. After four races there are 25 runners who have run each race.
