RESULTS:

May 15, 2004 - Croatian Mountain Running National Championships - Zagreb, Croatia
Report by Dragan Jankovic
I would like to inform you that last weekend we have very first Croatian Championship in Mountain Running. As I make arrangement with Croatian Athletic Association (HAS) last Autumn, Championship was official. Mr Milan Oreskovic, the secretary of HAS, was a official delegate in race and that was a sign of support for our sport here. Competitors were registered at HAS and there was even some runners from a track. Not the best ones, but this is improvement anyway.

Course was 13,7K long with 920m high difference. Start was at central square in Zagreb (115 altitude), and finnish on the highest pick Sljeme (1035) of city's mountain Medvednica. First Croatian Champion are Barbara Belusic from little town Labin, which is settled at peninsula Istra at Adriatic coast. She's third from 10,000m national championship on track few weeks before. Men competition won Sasa Belcic, several times national champion in 3000m steeple. Both of them wants to go to European Championship in Poland, as others top finishers, so I hope we'll get some better places then last year's EC. Unfortunately, our best runner Veronica Jurisic wasn't able to run this race, because she's recovering from serious injury (pelvic bone stress fracture). We hope she'll be fit until July.

Alltogether with seniors championship, we maked junior's race, too. They runs last 3K of the race, and I'll take best ones to 20. World trophy in Italy in September.
There were exactly 100 competitors, plus 22 juniors and relay runners.
Our friend from Serbia & Montenegro - Aleksandar Andjelic brings here 9 runners. That was first organized group of runners which came from Serbia to Croatia after war was started '91.

Comments by Dave Dunham

The course climbs 2400 feet and drops 400 feet over 8.5 miles. Kearsarge has been part of the circuit since 1996.  The first Kearsarge race was in 1995; previously many local runners had used the course as a tune-up for Mount Washington.  The first 5 miles is a rolling country road.  The real climb begins just after entering the Rollins State park at the 5-mile mark.  Typically racers will run about the same time for the first five as they do for the last 3-½ miles!  The final 3-½ miles are very tough; there are a few breaks in the climb and a very rare drop to really take something out of your legs.  The entire route is paved, although the last 3 ½ miles are un-plowed in the winter.  In 2001 the race had to stop at the 5-mile mark due to dangerous road conditions.  Course records are Nikki Kimball 1:04:30 (2002) and Dave Dunham 51:02 (1999).  Amenities include mile markers, water stops (3m/5m), baggage delivered to the finish, transportation back to the start, awards in seven age groups, and excellent homemade post-race goodies.

CMS will be fielding a strong team this year lead by 5 time winner Eric Morse.  Eric should be challenged by Paul Low, who won at Wachusett last week.  Paul will be running in his first Kearsarge.  Rich Bolt, owner of the 9th fastest time, should also challenge.  Kevin Tilton (5th at Wachusett) and Sergio Ribiero will also take a first shot at Kearsarge.  Rob Smith, Paul Young, and Dave Dunham are also expected to race.
