Another Year Down the Tubes

January 1, 2003
Dave Dunham

December total: 438 miles.  Most in a December, tops 1991 total of 437.  Only the 4th time over 400 in December

2002

  • Total Miles run – 4154 for an average of 11.3 per day.  11th best of 24 years.

  • Days off – 38 which is 11th lowest of 24 years

  • Average on days that I ran – 12.7

  • Races – 34 for a total of 338.7 miles. 17 Road, 4 trail, 2 Cross Country, 5 mountain, 6 snowshoe

  • 11 second places, 6 wins.  13 years with less races, but the 6th most distance raced –1 DNF = zero miles

  • 17 Orienteering races in 4 states and 2 countries.

  • States run in.  AK, AL, CO, CT, DE, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OK, PA, RI, VT.

  • Countries run in: USA, Austria, Belgium, and Czech Republic.

  • Best race: 1st at Stone Cat Ale 26.5m race.

  • Worst race: Tie – DNF at World Challenge 100K, Torhout Belgium and ???? place at the USATF NE 8m Championships.  I’m pretty sure they stopped counting finishers by the time I came in (laugh).

Good stuff:

Vacation on the summit of Mt Greylock with Cath.  My first winter hike, and really my first hike of any kind, with the gang.  Fun trip to Alaska with Cath, Rich, and Eric.  8 hours of orienteering with Ernst and Alar, thanks for letting me tag along!  Running for 8 hours with Rich in a practice Rogaine.  24 hours of Orienteering in the Czech Republic with Robert and meeting “Bob’s” parents.  Getting to be ‘Julie the cruise director’ at the chalet for the Mt Washington weekend (Remember, any eating establishment with “shack” or “shed” in the name HAS to be good).  Hanging out with Dan, Mark, and Kevin in Pittsburgh.  Goofing around in Huntsville with Byrne and Kevin, and as a bonus getting to be there when they both had good runs.  Mark’s wife quoting Sienfeld every lap during the Nifty Fifty, and Mark finishing his first 50m despite tough conditions.  Eric, Dan, Rich and Paul all making the USA mountain team.  Flying first class from London to Boston, still not sure how that happened!  Trying to explain to the race director at Dogtown that if you hold a race you actually have to time and score it.  The look on Scotty G’s face as he saw his victory slip away when he saw Petey, then saw me at the NMC’s Willard Brook trail race Payback for the Baystate marathon, Scott.

Lousy stuff:

Hospital stay in Belgium.  About 300 of the 365 days.  The entire stinkin’ month of August (but thank you Dan, Petey, and Rich for running with me in the water and Cath of course for not killing me while I muddled through).  The end of my streak of sub-5minute pace 5k’s and 5m’s.  Petey getting his hamstring injury and missing the last couple of months.  Missing another year of being on the US Mountain team.  Canceling my trip to CA for the 50k Nationals because of injuries.   The shortened Mt Washington race to the ½ way point.

Other stuff:

Quote: Adam Duritz – “There has to be a change, I’m sure.  Today was just a day fading into another, and that can’t be what a life is for”.

  • Days off – 1209

  • Average on days run – 11.25

  • Races – 793 (5036 miles raced).

Projected date to hit 100,000 miles…. August 20, 2006, save the date and come out to see my odometer roll over.

2003 ?????

Aiming to run well during the Snowshoe season and maybe do an Ultra in the spring and hopefully be ready to try and make the US Mountain running team.  Only 15 months and I’ll be a Master (40+ age group).

Long-Long range – 2004 March 27th (my 40th birthday) the Merrimack River trail race….
