Bradford MA is now the home of more US 100K team members than any other town in the country!

Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but there is no other town with two runners representing the USA at the world 100k challenge. Earlier this week the selection committee picked Dan Verrington, my long time training cohort to be on the team. It was a bit of a surprise to say the least. The team was originally selected back in February. Some of the team members either were not healthy enough to compete or had other commitments.

Cathy Dunham holds onto Dave, thus giving Dan Verrington a chance to take the lead.

The alternates moved up, but the six member team was still a bit short. Dan was called upon to fill out the team. Dan is a newcomer, having never competed beyond 50k (and that only once). Sometimes ignorance is bliss in which case Dan is truly in a state of bliss! I’m one of Dan’s biggest supporters (some one has to) and the selection makes quite a bit of sense. He won his only Ultra, the National Championships 50k. He has a history of performing well in international competition (6 times on the US mountain team), and he still has good speed (2:27 Marathon in Feb). Who knows how well he can run in a race that takes at LEAST 6 ½ hours!
Anyway, Dan and I will be heading over to Belgium for the 100k. Here is the web site: http://users.belgacom.net/nvvl/

Dave Dunham at the recent 50K Championships

I’m going back to hoping to make up for my DNF last year. The race is on a Friday NIGHT with an 8 PM start. The earliest finishers will come in at 2:30 AM! Some people will be out well into sunrise. I’m hoping to drag my lousy hamstring thru in about 7 hours, but Dan passing me may be a motivational force. We both are doing “normal” training to get ready. Nothing super-long for either of us (well I won’t be doing another 50k after this weekend). I’ll be doing the mountain circuit and Dan will be racing every-other weekend. Oh, yeah….with the addition of Dan CMS now has THREE runners on the US team. I don’t know if that has ever happened before (with the exception of a couple of mountain teams that I picked!). Cheers, DD
