Foot Locker XC

Future College Kiddies at Van Cortlandt
Report by the guy who spent Thanksgiving driving all over New Jersey
November 30, 2002

And, on this fine day in November, while two dozen CMS'ers were touring Worcester State for the weekly 5K, several CMS'ers ventured to the hallowed hills of Van Cortlandt Park in da' Bronx to witness the annual Foot Locker Northeast Regional High School XC championships.

In the Girl's seeded race, Harvard-Bromfield School's Ari Lambie, Central Mass and State D2 champion,  ran with the leaders through a 2:21 first half (remember, these are high school girls) then pulled away for the win.   Ari is not related to CMS now, but will show up in these pages next year as a "College Kiddie" when she pursues her college ed at Stanford (another Stanford recruit!).  Ari won handily over a 9th grader, Nicole Blood, from upstate New York. Sara Powell, younger sister of former State 1 & 2 mile champ Andy Powell, and the D1 state  champ made the finals in San Diego by placing 8th overall. Western Mass junior, Amber Sayer, with that long back stride, couldn't quite hang with the blistering pace, and came home 15th overall...maybe next year?    Winchendon's Caitlin Hallquist, younger sister of Evan Hallquist, now at UNH, was 117th.

Whereas the Girl's race strung out by the first mile, the Boy's seeded race was hotly contested all the way to the finishing flats, that 600 yard sprint to the finish.   Mass state champ and Belmont HS junior Victor Gras followed a flaming pace and held on for 8th overall to earn the trip to San Diego.  Only 2 seniors placed in the top 8.  2001 Mass State D2 Champ Andy Pitts of nearby Southwick, who set the course record at the Grafton Tufts U course, placed 17th overall. Junior Adam Tenerowicz of Blackstone Millville, 2nd at D2 States,  came home 28th overall. Wachusett junior Michael Banks was 56th.  Whitinsville Christian junior, Daniel Mackay, third at the D2 state meet and younger brother of Sara Mackay, was 87th overall. Steve Batcheller, Grafton HS senior, placed 144th overall.

There are ten races overall, the 2 seeded races, sandwiched by Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior runs.

In the Freshman girls, Caitlin Forgit of St Peter-Marian in Worcester, 18th at the D1 State meet (2nd Freshman),  came home 24th overall.  Southboro's Ingrid Guha was 49th. Northboro's Monique Remillard was 105th.

In the Junior boys, Michael Forgit, came home 87th overall.  Continuing the sister-brother act,  Northboro's Jake Remillard placed 210th.
