How the Grinch Stole...Running

December 23, 2000

The Grinch hated the Worms down in Worm-town they say,
So he snuck down in secret,
early Christmas eve day.

He stole all the numbers,
he stole the top prize,
He stole all the race apps,
all the pins and supplies.

Then he took it all up to top of Wachusetts
Packed high on his sleigh, he was ready to lose it.
He stared down at Worm-town!

The Grinch popped his eyes!
     Then he shook!
What he saw was a shocking surprise!

Every Worm down in Worm-town,
the tall and the small
Was running to Sterling!
Without numbers at all!

He hadn't stopped running from happening!
       It happened.

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling:
'how could it be so?'

'It came without numbers!
And no timing clock!'
'It came without Drewiak and no chute
          --what a shock!'

And he puzzled three hours,
'til his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!

'Maybe Running,' he thought, 'doesn't come from big races.'
'Maybe running ... perhaps ... comes from much higher places.

And what happened then ...?
Well ... In Wormtown they say
That the Grinch's small heart
Grew three sizes that day!
