The USATF Mountain Runner of the Year award recipients for 2000 are Dave Dunham, Bradford, MA and Cindy O'Neill, Manitou Springs, CO. This year marked Dunham's seventh appearance as a member of the U. S. Mountain Running team. He previously competed for the U.S. in '92-'96 and '98. Dunham's stellar year of performances included top U.S. finishes in major European mountain races, the World Mountain Running Trophy (12th overall), the Mount Washington Hill Climb (3rd overall) and a second-place finish at the Vail Hill Climb. Both Mount Washington and the Vail Hill Climb served as selection races for the U.S. Mountain Running Team. Dunham is active in the New England USATF association and organizes the New England Mountain Running Circuit. The 36-year-old is an accountant employed by the IRS.

Criteria for this year's selection included top results in US mountain/trail competitions and international competitions during 2000, current USATF membership, and serving as an ambassador for the sport.

O'Neill made her first U.S. Mountain Running Team this year by winning the Vail Hill Climb. She is a three-time champion of the Pikes Peak Ascent ('98, '99, '00) and was the top U.S. finisher at the World Mountain Running Trophy in Bergen, Germany this year. The 38-year-old O'Neill is a computer programmer.

This is the second year for the USATF Mountain Runner of the Year awards. Last year's recipients were Matt Carpenter and Danelle Ballengee both of Colorado.

Both O'Neill and Dunham will be on-hand to receive their awards in Albuquerque.
