Updates from the European track circuit, Regina Jacobs ponders her Olympic options, Oprah runs the San Diego Half, where to look for fall marathon training tips, and a chat with Adam Goucher.
The European track circuit hit a high note last Friday with the Weltklasse in Zurich. Hicham el Guerrouj (3:27.21 for 1500m) and Gabriela Szabo (8:26.35 for 3000m) put up world-leading times, and Haile Gebrselassie won the 5000m, continuing an undefeated streak that extends back to Weltklasse in 1996.
San Diego's America's Finest City half-marathon brought out stars of street and small screen - behind course-record-setting winners Peter Githuka (1:02:24) and Cristina Pomacu (1:10:44), Oprah Winfrey and members of her production company finished in the pack.
Max VO2 is the technical term for the maximum volume of oxygen that your body can transport to your muscles. The higher your max, the more oxygen your muscles receive, and the greater your endurance. - from Amby Burfoot, Runner's World Complete Book of Running, page 150. Get stronger, faster: Wanna get fit fast? We don’t have some miracle supplement to offer you, but rather a personal trainer. In a study by Ball State University, researchers found that athletes lifting weights under supervision not only showed a greater increase in strength, but that increase occurred more quickly than in a non-supervised group. Researchers concluded that the supervised group performed better due to the more efficient use of the increase in training loads and external motivation. However, don’t fret if you can’t afford a trainer, the unsupervised group significantly improved its strength as well, just not as fast.
Train like a Champ: Of course you want to win. Most competitive runners do, but the trick is to train properly so you can set yourself up for victory. Researchers at the University of Nebraska evaluated the training regiments of Division I teams that either qualified or didn’t qualify for the NCAA cross-country championships. The result was that teams who utilized hill workouts in the off-season and did interval training at the peaking period had the fastest times at the end of the season.

Listening to music is fine, if you do it on the treadmill or stairclimber. But when you run outdoors, leave the headphones at home. When you can’t hear what’s going on around you, you make yourself vulnerable. - Eileen Portz-Shovlin, RW senior editor
To dream anything that you want to dream, that is the beauty of the human mind. To do anything that you want to do, that is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself, to test your limits, that is the courage to succeed. - Bernard Edmonds
