Runners sizzle in Switzerland, Tulu wins again, results from the Peachtree Road Race, how to heat up sore muscles, Johnny Gray, and what to wear on hot, sunny days.

==== News ====

There's a lot to be said for entering the Olympics as top dog, so track fans around the world are carefully watching the world-leaders lists. (You'll find our collection of the year's fastest performances at the bottom of each Daily News.) Four world-leading times were posted in Lausanne, Switzerland on Wednesday night, and on Saturday, Derartu Tulu ran a world-leading 10,000 meters at the New Balance Maine Distance Festival.

In the last three weeks, Ali Saidi-Seif, a 22-year-old Algerian, became the sixth-fastest man in history at 3000 meters and the fifth-fastest at 5000 meters. So why does he want to run 1500 meters in Sydney?

Every July 4, tens of thousands of runners stream through the streets of Atlanta in the Peachtree 10-K Road Race. Lornah Kiplagat set a course record of 30:52 winning the women's race; 1970 champion Jeff Galloway, with number 95367, ran 1:44:14.

======= Training Tip ======

Max VO2 is the technical term for the maximum volume of oxygen that your body can transport to your muscles. The higher your max, the more oxygen your muscles receive, the greater your endurance. - from Amby Burfoot, Runner's World Complete Book of Running, page 150. You can buy this book at: http://rodalepress7.cam-colo.bbnplanet.com:8080/T/A77.88.6.2.4528

======== Health and Fitness ========

The Heat is On: Applying mild heat to a sore muscle for up to 8 hours can reduce pain, one study has found. And now, you can do it during your workday without anyone noticing. Proctor and Gamble has introduced a thin heated portable wrap called ThermaCare that you can wear underneath your clothing. The heat discs in the wrap warm up when you remove them from the packaging. Right now, the company makes wraps designed for the lower back and abdominal area, but will be designing leg wraps in the future. Cost $8.99. Call (800) 488-7288 or go to http://www.thermacare.com

======= Editor's Advice =======

Wear a thin, loose-fitting, synthetic shirt on your runs even when it’s very hot and sunny. Because it will keep some of the sun’s rays off your skin, you’ll stay cooler with the shirt than without it." - Eileen Portz-Shovlin, RW senior editor
