==== News ====

On Wednesday, in her first race since her suspension ended, Jamaican Merlene Ottey ran the fastest women's 100 meters by a masters competitor.

Catherine Ndereba wins so consistently she looks unstoppable, and when Kenyan road champions seem to change every year, Ndereba's third win at the annual Boilermaker 15-K last weekend in Utica, New York (in course-record time) displays remarkable consistency.

Track fans are flocking to the U.S. Olympic Trials, from July 14 to the 23rd. We've been hearing from Jeff Billing and Ben Smith, two college students who are driving from Connecticut to Sacramento. When we last heard from Ben and Jeff, they were in Minneapolis...

======= Training Tip ======

Never apply tape directly to your bare skin. The chances of an irritation and blistering are high when you mix tape, exercise, and sweat. Use prewrap, a thin foam that goes on the skin before tape. You can find prewrap at sporting goods stores and drugstores. - from Joe Ellis, Running Injury-Free, page 83. ======== Health and Fitness ========

Patiently weight: A review by University Hospital in Antwerp, Belgium has found that moderate weight loss is more likely to be maintained over time. Setting an attainable goal helps you stick with your exercise program. Plus, if your blood pressure is high, modest exercise will help normalize it even if it takes longer to reach your ideal weight. Reducing your weight only 5 to 10 percent may also reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and the need to take medications for your blood pressure.

Torpid Teens: Teenagers in middle and high school are spending more time in front of the television and attending gym class less, according to a study by the University of North Carolina. Researchers analyzed data from more than 17,000 teenagers. Those who had a physical education class five times a week were more than twice as likely to be highly active, engaging in such activities as running, cycling, and martial arts. The more TV teens watch, the less exercise they get.

====== Words to think about ======

The music of the marathon is a powerful martial strain, one of those tunes of glory. It asks us to forsake pleasures, to discipline the body, to find courage, to renew faith and to become one's own person, utterly and completely.- George Sheehan
