The life and fast times of Marion Jones and Hicham el Guerrouj, the latest space-age running gear, preventing lung cancer, one great hot weather tip, and some super July 4th races.

==== News ====

How does it feel to be the best track and field athlete in the world? Ask Marion Jones of the U.S. and Hicham el Guerrouj from Morocco - both ranked first on the IAAF World Rankings released this week.

Some of the best U.S. mountain runners will descend on Vail, Colorado, this weekend, in the hopes of winning slots on the U.S. Mountain Running Team.

Both the Prefontaine Classic and the adidas Oregon Track Classic last weekend rounded out great performances by athletes bound for the Olympic Trials.

Check out the Nike-designed Swift Suit, as worn by one very fast Marion Jones. The suit (along with garments designed by several other companies) is changing the way our Olympic athletes gear up on race day.

======= Training Tip ======

The typical sedentary woman needs approximately 1,800 calories per day; a female distance runner may need 2,400 to 3,000 calories per day, depending on her mileage. (A good rule of thumb is about 100 calories per mile.) "You have to realize that you're eating for performance and not just because it's dinner time," says 2:34 marathoner Joy Smith. - from Ken Sparks and Dave Kuehls, The Runners Book of Training Secrets, page 144. ======== Health and Fitness ========

Lift free-radicals away: Weightlifting can destroy free-radicals—the little rogue molecules that damage tissues and accelerate aging, according to a study done at the University of Florida. Those who started a weight lifting program decreased their free radical damage by 2 percent compared to a 13 percent increase in those who did nothing at all.

Workout your lungs: You can literally run away from lung cancer, according to a new study. The study, conducted by The Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, involved nearly 26,000 men. Those who were in good shape were 2.5 times less likely to die of lung cancer than those who were the least fit.;

======= Editor's Advice =======

In really hot weather, start all your runs more slowly than usual (even races). Otherwise, lactate production--which increases in the heat--may cut your performance short. - Adam Bean, RW managing editor ;

====== Words to think about ======

You must always realize one thing. In every little village in the world there are great potential champions who only need motivation, development and good exercise evaluation. Arthur Lydiard, New Zealand's most famous coach
