Bolder Boulder report, Vermont City Marathon, good news for the injury prone, a new RW pace team destination, and a chat with Steve Holman.
Usually Haile Gebrselassie is the only whirlwind to hit the Dutch town of Hengelo in May, but this year a line of dangerous thunderstorms swept through the Netherlands forcing cancellation of the Adriaan Paulen Memorial track meet. Gebrselassie, who has set several world records at the Paulen event, will wait for later in the summer to make his season debut.
Over the Memorial Day holiday, one of America's leading running communities, Boulder, Colorado, staged its annual Bolder Boulder 10-K. This was the third year the elite race was run as an international competition between three-person teams, and the women's race saw its first-ever three-woman sweep as Ethiopians led by World Cross-Country Champion Derartu Tulu. Silvio Guerra of Ecuador broke up a similar sweep by the Kenyans, finishing third.
The marathon of the weekend was Vermont City in Burlington, VT; Charlene Lyford and Greg Hill were the winners. Hill was running his last competitive marathon.
By definition, optimal performance occurs only when the physical, mental, and emotional selves work harmoniously together. Your ability to relax prior to and during a performance will have a tremendous impact on bringing the "big three" together. - from Amby Burfoot, Runner's World Complete Book of Running, page 192. Have a heart: A majority of women who complained to their doctors of chest pain and other symptoms had to wait as long as a year to get an angiogram (a test that determines whether arteries are clogged). Men were more likely to receive an angiogram soon after they complained of symptoms, according to an Austrian study.
Patch up your injury: Researchers at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York recently tested an NSAID patch that can be applied to the site of an injury. In the 200 people tested, the patch reduced pain without increasing GI symptoms. The patch still must pass approval by the Food and Drug Administration, which could take about a year and a half.

On June 10 Steve Holman was scheduled to return to Minnesota to run in the Minnesota Distance Classic, and take a shot at the American record for 1000 meters. Unfortunately, his second stress fracture this year altered those plans. While he's still going to Minnesota to promote the meet, he won't be able to race. Instead he'll focus his energy on getting ready for July's Olympic Trials. Runner’s World spoke with Holman: < http://www.runnersworld.com/dailynew/archives/2000/May/000531.html#chat >

When you’re trail running, watch out for shiny mud. If it’s shiny, it’s probably wet and slick. Mud with a dull appearance is usually firmer and safer to run on. – Beth Moxey Eck, RW associate editor
What does the race mean? Staying ahead, being with others, hanging in there, taking one step and then the other. Each step exacts a toll, yet I have prepared and trained for every footfall. The pace is mine. The race is mine. I own the process it took to get here, one that includes workouts and the fantasies and realities of pushing ahead.- excerpt from "Breaking Through The Wall" by Dolores E. Cross
