The Khannouchi saga, Penn Relays and Marion Jones, a nifty, new humidity/heat chart for runners, and the scoop on the first annual Country Music Marathon.
The long-running Khalid Khannouchi saga is going into hiatus. After weeks of increasing speculation over the marathon world-record-holder's citizenship, events came to a head early last week. Khannouchi was sworn in as a U.S. citizen early Tuesday; on Wednesday, he announced in a news conference that his injuries following the London Marathon were too severe to allow him to compete in Sunday's U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Instead, he will try for a place on the U.S. team at 10,000m in Sacramento in July.
It's a long way to Sacramento, but three of America's biggest track stars were out at the Penn Relays, and Marion Jones even delivered the anchor leg of a world-record 4x200m relay.
With most of the major marathons in the country talking "entry cap," any new races are welcome, particularly if they're produced by the same team which made the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon a comeback hit. The first running of Nashville's Country Music Marathon was smoother than the debut of Rock 'n' Roll and put a new destination on the marathon map.
I once checked to see how much time I lost walking through water stations and it was only 7 seconds per station. That adds up to less than a minute lost during a marathon, and you'll probably make up more than that time by staying cool. - from Hal Higdon’s Smart Running, page 93. Once you've decided to run a race—especially if it's your first—make it known. Tell friends and family members about your goal, and post the race brochure on your fridge. All this "publicity" will keep you motivated to train. - Adam Bean, RW managing editor
The fear of running a long race can come from the fact that you know it's going to be physically painful. And unless you are a masochist, nobody likes pain. And if you dwell on this, it can make you nervous. Ron Hill, one of Great Britain's most prolific runners who won the 1970 Boston Marathon and finished 6th in the 1972 Olympic race.
