Avon Championships, Bay to Breakers, high school star runs 4:03 mile, portabello mushrooms, how to dress for the weather, Matt Giusto, and this weekend’s events.

==== News ====

The Avon Running Global Championships, a women's-only series now in its third year, took its championships 10-K to Milan, Italy this year. And the field had a truly global face. In addition to national winners from around the world, Avon brought in Irish star Sonia O'Sullivan, defending champion Tegla Loroupe from Kenya, and 1992 Olympic champion Derartu Tulu from Ethiopia. It was O'Sullivan who took the victory in an Irish-record 30:59.

For one day, at least, B2B isn't techie shorthand for "Business to Business" in San Francisco. For 89 years (and for over 70,000 runners) it means Bay to Breakers, a hilly 12-K won this year by Colleen De Reuck and this year's hot Kenyan, Reuben Cheruiyot.

South Lakes (Virginia) H.S. star miler Alan Webb took another shot at a sub-4 mile in an all-high-school race Saturday evening, but was off pace early in a crowded field and ended up three seconds short - still running a PR and winning the race by five seconds. Webb will try again this year - and next, since he has a year of high school remaining.

======= Training Tip ======

A sedentary person might not notice subtle signs of food intolerance. Running, however, imposes an enormous strain on the body's homeostatic mechanisms. For runners, the equation is simple: prolonged or intense exercise plus food intolerance results in symptoms. - from George Sheehan’s Running to Win, page 91. ======== Health and Fitness ========

Throw a ‘shroom on the barbie: Marinate portabello mushrooms in balsamic vinegar and olive oil for 30 minutes before grilling. Containing mostly water, with some potassium, folate, phosphorus and selenium, some exotic mushrooms taste like steak but have a lot less fat and calories. For dessert, try grilled fruit. The fruit's sugar will caramelize in the heat for a dessert that’ll entice any sweet tooth.

An hour a day: If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to work out for at least one hour, five days a week. Research presented to the North American Association for the Study of Obesity found successful dieters burned an average 2,800 calories a week - the equivalent of running 28 miles. Those who maintained their weight loss averaged 280 minutes of exercise a week. Most combined various aerobic activities such as running and cycling with strength training.

======= Editor's Advice =======

Emphasize turnover when running downhill, keeping your stride short and your feet close to the ground. Otherwise, your quads will take a pounding. - Mark Remy, RW senior editor

====== Words to think about ======

The marathon is about being in contention over the last 10-K. That's when it's about what you have in your core. You have run all the strength, all the superficial fitness out of yourself, and it really comes down to what's left inside you. To be able to draw deep and pull something out of yourself is one of the most tremendous things about the marathon- Rob de Castella, Australian marathoner who won the gold medal in the 1983 World Championship race. He also won titles in Japan's Fukuoka race and the Boston Marathon.
