Held holds tough in ultra debut, Maurice Greene and Marion Jones shine at Osaka Grand Prix, how to conquer nail fungus, one more reason to stay hydrated and Dan Middleman.

==== News ====

For years track athletes unable to break into the top rank of their event have been told that moving up in distance might be the key to success. Wisconsin's Dan Held, a past member of U.S. World Championship teams for cross-country, half-marathon, and the marathon, never managed a qualifying time for the Olympic Marathon Trials. Instead he ran the U.S. 50-mile championships on May 13 and scored a 13-minute win over several veteran ultrarunners. Held's debut ultra missed the course record of 5:53:21 by just over a minute, clocking 5:54:41.

Marion Jones and Maurice Greene kicked off the Olympic year Grand Prix in Osaka, Japan, the first top-rank GP meet of 2000. Jones and Greene both put up world-leading times in the 100m.

======= Training Tip ======

Your track sessions, fartlek, and tempo runs should be run faster than your marathon pace but no faster than 5-K pace. You don't need to develop sprint speed for the marathon, but you do want to develop enough speed that your marathon race pace feels easy. - from Dagny Scott’s Runner's World Complete Book of Women's Running, page 116. You can buy this book at: http://rodalepress7.cam-colo.bbnplanet.com:8080/T/A7.10.63.2.4141

======== Health and Fitness ========

Stay hydrated, run longer: Besides increasing your susceptibility to heat-related illness, dehydration also lowers your lactate threshold, which makes you feel exhausted faster, according to a study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

Nail fungus down: If you've avoided prescription nail fungus medication because of the side effects and high cost, try a new less invasive solution: Penlac Nail Lacquer (ciclopirox). According to research, the clear prescription nail polish inhibits fungal growth in one third of those who try it. If you are interested, talk to your family doctor, podiatrist, or dermatologist to get a prescription.

======= Editor's Advice =======

On an hour's run, your feet produce enough sweat to fill an 8-ounce glass. That's why it's important to avoid cotton socks, which will absorb this moisture, and choose synthetic socks, which will wick it away from your feet. - Eileen Portz-Shovlin, RW senior editor

====== Words to think about ======

Have a dream. Make a plan. Go for it. You'll get there, I promise.- Zoe Koplowitz, Achilles Track Club member with multiple sclerosis who required 24 hours on crutches but finished the 1993 New York City Marathon
