==== In this issue ====

The latest on Khannouchi’s citizenship struggle, a record falls at the Cooper River Run, why drinking tea will make you stronger, even more news on preventing runner’s trots, and a brief chat with BobKennedy.

==== News ====

If the running world were a soap opera, the current plot surrounding Khalid Khannouchi and whether or not he’ll be able to run the Sydney Olympics for the U.S. would have it sitting high atop the ratings. Khannouchi has appeared on the Today Show, has been featured in national magazines (not just ones about running), and still, the details of his citizenship battle seem to change daily. We'll try to bring you up to date:

While Khannouchi was sitting in lawyers’ offices, however, the Kenyans were out running in Charleston, South Carolina. James Koskei took advantage of a good day to run a course-record time at the Cooper River Bridge Run 10-K, with former record holder Joseph Kimani in third. Catherine Ndereba won the women's race as she completed her tune-up for her second attempt at the Boston Marathon.

======= Training Tip ======

Training is not always "on." Your peak times usually seem to balance out with times when you feel sluggish. Accept these "down" times. Don't attempt the same training and don't compare. If necessary, take new routes or leave your watch at home. - from Joan Benoit Samuelson and Gloria Averbuch’s Running for Women, page 64. ======== Health and Fitness ========

Stop the runs: If you often suffer from exercise-induced diarrhea, eat digestion-slowing foods during the morning such as cooked rice with raisins, applesauce, crackers, tea, half-and-half with water, and lactose-free or soy milk. Then, run during the early afternoon, suggests Basil Rodansky, M.D., in the February issue of the Physician and SportsMedicine.

Bone up on tea: The bones of regular tea drinkers are about 5 percent stronger than the bones of non tea drinkers, according to a recent study. The isoflavonoids in tea may keep bones strong by mimicking the hormone estrogen, which can slow bone-mineral loss in post-menopausal women.

If you have between 400 and 500 miles on your running shoes, it’s probably time for a new pair. But with the way shoe companies upgrade your favorite models, you may need help making that new purchase. Got a question? Post it on our Shoe Forum and let our shoe expert Bob Wischnia answer your question. http://proxicom.rodalestore.com:8080/servlet/AppServer?t=login/login_rw .

======== Interview ========

Among Americans, Bob Kennedy has dominated the 5,000 meters, ranking number 1 every year since 1991. Although Kennedy only ran the 10,000 once, his time of 27:38.37 was the fastest in the U.S. last year and placed him sixth-fastest American of all time. Clearly it has changed Kennedy's thinking for the Olympic year as the 29-year-old is leaning more toward running the 10,000 in the Olympic Trials rather than the 5000. Runner’s World spoke with Kennedy: http://www.runnersworld.com/dailynew/archives/2000/March/000331.html#chat

======= Editor's Advice =======

Reserve a special pair of shoes for racing (they don’t have to be flats). Don’t even wear them during your warmup or cooldown; use them strictly for going fast. Lacing them up will help to put you in a "fast" frame of mind before a race. - Mark Remy, RW senior editor

====== Words to think about ======

Good workouts give you confidence and a 'feel good' mood. This mood, in turn, gives added confidence. When it's time to prove your ability in a race, belief in yourself can make the difference. - Joan Samuelson
