==== In this issue ====

The buzz surrounding Deena Drossin, winners of the World Cross Champs, new research on gym class and fitness trails, Collette Liss and weekend running events.

==== News ====

It's one of those annoying things that's happened to nearly every runner: you're out on a training run and a bug flies into your mouth. Except the insect that Deena Drossin inadvertently inhaled was a bee, and she was less than 100 meters into the World Cross Country Championships. Drossin held on to finish 12th; Derartu Tulu grabbed the win. Paul Tergat also didn't perform to his expectations, but he couldn't blame an insect - just his teammates and team officials. The regal Tergat, hoping for an unprecedented sixth-straight championship, barely slept the night before the event because he was trying to convince his teammates to race. Tergat finished third. Moroccan-born Belgian Mohammed Mourhit was the first non-Kenyan champion since Khalid Skah (in 1991) and the first European champion since Carlos Lopes (1985).

======= Training Tip ======

Periodization refers to using different training programs for different periods of the year. While you may not want to divert time from running to do strength training when the weather is nice, cold winds and snow may make a workout indoors pumping iron more attractive. - from Hal Higdon’s, How to Train, page 180. ======== Health and Fitness ========

Give them gym: Children who took a daily physical education classes until grade 6 had no better aerobic fitness, strength, or cholesterol levels 20 years later than children who took gym only once a week. The researchers conclude that daily physical education classes must continue through adolescence to affect lifestyle choices during adulthood.

Build it and they will run: When communities built fitness trails, more local residents walked, ran, or hiked regularly, according to a Saint Louis University study. It costs between $2,000 and $4,000 to build a trail, and local public and private agencies are often willing to lend a hand.

Collette Liss, 26, a 1999 graduate of Valparaiso University, has made a strong transition from the collegiate to the open ranks. Along with Marla Runyan, Liss was the only other U.S. woman to break 9 minutes for 3000 meters indoors this season (8:58.47) and was second to Regina Jacobs at the recent U.S. Indoor Championships in the mile. Runner’s World spoke with Liss: <http://www.runnersworld.com/dailynew/archives/2000/March/000317.html#chat

======= Editor's Advice =======

Have trouble getting up for morning runs? Lay out your running gear on the bedroom floor the night before. Then move your alarm clock across the room, so you’ll have to get out of bed to turn it off. - Eileen Portz-Shovlin, RW senior editor

====== Words to think about ======

Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could go. It helps us to find out what we are made of." - PattiSue Plumer, two-time Olympic 3,000-meter runner
