Bad news for Dieter Baumann, the New York City Marathon made simple, new theories on heart attacks, active kids lower their breast cancer risk and Todd Williams.

==== News ====

For years, entry to the New York City Marathon has been almost as challenging as the marathon itself, leading some to wonder how as many as 30,000 people actually get numbers every year; whispers say the NYRRC turns away two runners for every one allowed in. In response, for the 2000 edition the Road Runners Club has announced a different system for entry, giving priority to dedicated NYRRC members and simplifying the process for everyone else, including making the application available online for the first time.

The January 16 death of 1972 NYCM champ Sheldon Karlin of a heart attack at age 49 has brought to light newer information on heart disease. Recent advances suggest that cholesterol isn't the only villain; it's an accomplice to other arterial problems. The good news is that all the things you've been doing to lower your risk of heart disease are still the right things to do.

Dieter Baumann's doping-panel nightmare continues in Germany. The German federation, the DLV, announced that it was recommending a two-year ban of the 1992 Olympic 5000m champion. The DLV says all it requires to recommend the ban is two positive samples; meanwhile, investigators for the German police say they believe Baumann was framed with nandrolone-laced toothpaste, pointing out that the amount of the steroid was too small for Baumann to have seen any performance-enhancing effect.

======= Training Tip ======

Since liquids empty from the stomach quickly and leave little residue in the intestines which may cause discomfort while exercising, I often recommend liquid carbohydrate supplements as a prerace meal. -- from Liz Applegate, Power Foods, page 64. ======== Health and Fitness ========

Get your kids active: The Carolina Breast Cancer Study has gathered information from more than 1,000 women. Those who walked or cycled to school, trained competitively or performed vigorous household chores at age 12 had a lower risk of breast cancer than those who did not.

You can keep the weight off: According to a new study published in the International Journal of Obesity, about 27 percent of those surveyed had lost at least 10 percent of their total weight and maintained that weight loss for five or more years.

======= Editor's Advice =======

When you're heading out for a cold-weather run, smear a little petroleum jelly over your cheeks and nose (after you've put your sunscreen on, of course). It will help keep the chill off, and keep your skin from becoming too dry. – Adam Bean, RW managing editor

====== Words to think about ======

It's elevating and humbling at the same time. Running along a beach at sunrise with no other footprints in the sand, you realize the vastness of creation, your own insignificant space in the plan, how tiny you really are, your own creatureliness and how much you owe to the supreme body, the God that brought all this beauty and harmony into being. -- Sister Marion Irvine, 2:51 PR and 1984 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier
