Welcome to the new millennium, and with it, a new year for triathlon. The race directors are busy working on their schedules for 2001. Time-Out Productions has posted the schedule on their web site, http://www.timeout-productions.com. Bill Fiske and his crew have posted their schedule at their new web site, http://www.firm-racing.com.
The first event of the 9-event FIRM Grand Prix is the Wrentham Duathlon, April 29, 2001.
There will be an interesting event at Tuckerman Ravine, North Conway, NH, on April 21, 2001. The Son of Inferno is a pentathlon, combining running, kayaking, biking, hiking, and skiing, for teams and solo competitors. Check out http://www.friendsoftuckerman.org for all the details.
The New England Region of USA Triathlon, the governing body for triathlon, has announced some of its regional championships for 2001. Check out their website at http://www.usat-ne.org/index.html for schedule and more.
- The Sprint Championship will be in North Attleboro.
- The Olympic Championship will once again be held in Hartford.
- The Long Course Championship is at a new triathlon, the Timberman Triathlon, to be held in the area of Lake Winnipesaukee in August.
I have not seen any information about the regional duathlon championship.
Let me briefly introduce myself. I am in my third year of triathlon, having come from a running background. You can time my swimming with a sundial. I competed in 5 triathlons in 1999 and 8 last year, but managed to rack up a whopping 0, count 'em, 0 points in the FIRM Grand Prix. I'm a middle-of-the-packer in the M35-39 age group on a good day, but I'm enthusiastic about getting people interested in multisport. Once I saw my first triathlon, I realized that not everyone had a perfect body, and that there were lots of plain folks having a good time. I encourage you to give it a try if only to say you've done it. You might enjoy it.
I have a list of people who have competed for CMS Multisport previously and have begun a mailing-list on Yahoo Groups for exchanging information. Yahoo groups (http://www.yahoogroups.com) offers the ability to store files, the mailing list of team members, calendars of events, a digest of past messages, and more.
I also hope to affiliate the CMS Multisport with USA Triathlon, so that people who join USAT will receive a slight discount on their membership. The one-day membership fee for USAT-sanctioned races has increased from $5 to $7. If you want to find a training partner, coordinate a workout, or join the distribution list, contact me by email at sam.levitin@compaq.com or by phone at 508.841.2993. Train safely.
If you are looking for training partners or just someone to run with , try posting a notice on the message board of the CMS website, (www.cmsrun.org).
